5 Cheap Ways to Make Your Home Smell Fresh and Clean with DIY Air Fresheners!
It’s something most, if not all, of us strive for: keeping our home smelling CLEAN. For starters, I must emphasize that this comforting aroma does start with a clean house. While all these DIY air freshener solutions about to be mentioned are great ways to make your home smell nice, the real way to get rid of any foul smells is to clean the smell at the source. So that means you must clean your house on a regular basis. If you notice that your house is smelly, here are some things that you can do to clear it out:
• Make sure you have a “No Shoes in the House policy” – Shoes track in dirt, and dirt smells.
• Vacuum your soft surfaces, carpets, and upholstery frequently.
• You also want to empty your garbage cans often – This leads to unwanted odors as well.
• Open your windows and let that fresh air come in!
Now, let’s get to the fresh fragrances …
Simmer Your Scents
A great way to make your main floor smell incredible is to boil up some pleasant ingredients in a pot with water, or you can even do this in a crockpot and allow the ingredients to simmer all day. Fill your pot or crockpot halfway with water and add any combination you prefer. Cinnamon sticks, apple peels, orange rinds, and whole cloves are a perfect combo to try.
You want to bring your pot to a boil and once that happens, you bring it down to a simmer and keep an eye on it while the stove is on. The slow cooker, thankfully, can be left unattended.
Freshen Up with Joe
At department stores, specifically in the perfume section, you’ve probably noticed coffee beans or ground coffee sitting on the counter. Have you ever wondered why? This is because the coffee “cleanses your palate” after giving it a quick sniff between perfume samples. Well, ground coffee or beans can help deodorize any space in your home.
All you do is add the coffee to a bowl or open container and stick them anywhere you need deodorizing. Examples may be your closets or drawers. Leave the containers there and notice the coffee start to absorb all the odor and replace them regularly. Now, your room won’t smell like coffee, but your odors will dissipate.
These are two things you can do to freshen up your fridge and this involves vanilla extract. The first thing you can do is wipe the plastic interior of your fridge with a little vanilla extract on a paper towel. The reason this works is because plastic is porous, and the extract helps neutralize odors. The second thing you can do is soak a couple of cotton balls with the vanilla, leaving them in a bowl and placing the bowl in the fridge, neutralizing odors as well.
The fourth cheap DIY air freshener is white vinegar. Yes, I said it, white vinegar. All you do is, again, pour some vinegar into some bowls and place them around your home. This won’t make your home smell like a salad, but it will make foul smells disappear. You can put them near your kitty litter, or any other strong odor that you don’t like. Vinegar works like a charm!
Essential oils can be used to spruce up ANY space in your home. If you have your own diffuser or nebulizer, this is a nice way to keep your home smelling fresh with a light scent. You can even use essential oils in homemade cleaning products, or natural products that don’t contain any scents. Essential oils can be used to relax you, like lavender, or give you energy, like citrus, depending on which ones you choose.
Which DIY air fresheners will you decide to utilize? Which scent combinations are your favorite?
